Application Process 

As board positions become available they will be announced on the website and @cab2acpd on Instagram. Those interested in serving on the ACPD Community Advisory Board can submit an online application for consideration. Based on institutional affiliation, all applications will go through a review process as determined by each individual institution and final appointees to the board will be selected by each institution’s executive leadership. 

Members of the ACPD Community Advisory Board will be expected to play an active role in police-community discussions, develop recommendations and strategies, facilitate the strengthening of ongoing relationships between the police and the campus community, and engage in two-way communication with their institution to advocate for all perspectives, ideas and concerns. Each new member will be required to complete an orientation course with the ACPD, which includes a four-hour block of instruction and a four-hour ride-along with an ACPD officer (adhering to COVID-19 protocols), so that all members have an informed foundation from which to begin their work.

The ACPD Community Advisory Board is a representation of the students, faculty, and staff of the Auraria Campus, and members of the surrounding Denver community, comprised of up to fifteen (15) members.

Each institution’s executive office appoints: 

  • Two Student Members
     
  • One Faculty Member
     
  • One Staff or Community Member
    Examples of a community member include, but are not limited to, any individuals from St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, campus vendors, or individuals from the City and County of Denver.  

AHEC does not directly serve student constituents nor employ faculty members. AHEC selects three AHEC staff and/or community members to serve on the institution’s behalf. 

The executive office of each constituent institution and AHEC approve the final membership for their organizational representation. ACPD Community Advisory Board members serve at the will of the institution and may be removed or replaced by their appointing institution at any time.  

The Chief of the ACPD and the Chief Executive Officer of the Auraria Higher Education Center serve as ex officio members on the ACPD Community Advisory Board. 


Orientation

Each new member of the ACPD Community Advisory Board will be required to complete a departmental orientation course, which will be coordinated by the Auraria Campus Police Department.  The basic course will consist of a 4-hour block of instruction, a diversity training session, and a 4-hour ride-along with an Auraria Campus Police Officer. The intent of the orientation is to provide each member with a basic understanding of police department responsibilities and protocols, and the campus’ approach to policing and public safety, so that members have a true foundation from which to begin their tenure.

*Due to current restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, an alternative to the traditional ACPD ride-along will be established to supplement the instructional component of the training and to provide members with a view of our officers’ physical scope of work on the Auraria Campus. 


Chairperson(s)

The ACPD Community Advisory Board will elect a chairperson(s). The term of this position may be reviewed and/or modified by a vote of the ACPD Community Advisory Board. If a chairperson vacancy exists, the ACPD Community Advisory Board will select a successor.


Membership Term

The term of appointment is generally two years for staff and faculty members and one year for student members, but this may be reviewed and/or modified annually by the ACPD Community Advisory Board. If a member graduates, leaves University employment or discontinues their affiliation with the unit or organization they represent, their membership on the ACPD Community Advisory Board will also conclude.


Meetings

Meetings will be held monthly or as the need arises, as determined by the ACPD Community Advisory Board. Meeting dates and locations will be determined by members to best accomplish the ACPD Community Advisory Board goals and schedules. Electronic meeting notifications will be managed by the Auraria Campus Executive Office. 


Compensation

Members appointed to the ACPD Community Advisory Board will serve without compensation from The Auraria Higher Education Center or from the Auraria Campus Police Department.


Bi-Annual Reports

The ACPD Community Advisory Board Chairperson/s will generate bi-annual community reports on the activities and status of the ACPD Community Advisory Board. The board will have the opportunity to present to the Auraria Executives Council and Auraria Board of Directors, if appropriate.
